Payam Javan: According to data from FlightAware, more than 2,000 flights inside, into, or out of the United States were canceled between Friday and Sunday, while almost 14,000 more were delayed ahead of Juneteenth and Father’s Day, which both fall on Sunday this year.
On Friday, 1,473 flights were canceled and 8,958 were delayed, according to FlightAware, while 818 flights were canceled and 4,884 were delayed so far on Saturday. In addition, as of Saturday evening, 419 flights scheduled for Sunday had been canceled.
The delays occur during a period of high airport traffic this weekend. According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), 2,438,784 passengers passed through airport checkpoints on Friday. This is the most traffic the agency has seen since November 28, 2021, the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
In recent months, severe weather has also resulted in airline cancellations and delays.
