Israel Strikes Iran in Response to Missile Attacks, Regional Tensions Soar

Payam Javan: Israel launched a series of strikes against Iranian military targets early Saturday, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing hostilities between the two nations. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the operation as a response to what they described as “months of continuous attacks” from Iran. Explosions were reported in Tehran, though Iranian authorities claimed only limited damage. The strikes come after a major ballistic missile attack from Iran on October 1, which was intercepted by Israeli missile defenses with support from two U.S. naval destroyers.

In a statement, IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari emphasized Israel’s commitment to defending itself against attacks originating from Iran and its regional proxies. The IDF claims that Iranian forces, along with groups backed by Tehran, have launched attacks on Israel from multiple fronts since October 7, when Hamas initiated hostilities. Israel’s recent strikes targeted missile production facilities, surface-to-air missile sites, and other aerial assets within Iran. Tehran responded by closing its airspace, prompting commercial airlines to avoid routes through Iran and neighboring countries.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin affirmed American support for Israel’s right to self-defense in a conversation with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Austin underscored the United States’ commitment to preventing the conflict from escalating further. Israel’s actions follow weeks of intensified confrontations with Hezbollah, Iran’s proxy in Lebanon, including strikes that killed high-ranking Hezbollah figures. The ongoing hostilities underscore the rising regional tensions and the potential for a broader Middle Eastern conflict.
