Fresno State beat San Jose State 40-9 on Thanksgiving Day

Payam Javan: Fresno State beat San Jose State 40-9 on Thanksgiving Day, with Jake Haener throwing for 343 yards and four touchdowns.

Fresno State (9-3, 6-2) scored back-to-back touchdowns three minutes apart to finish the first half and then opened the second half with a field goal and a touchdown to break away from San Jose State (5-7, 3-5).

To establish a 23-9 halftime advantage, Haener connected with Juan Rodriguez from six yards out and then Jordan Mims on a 45-yarder. Haener had touchdown passes of 29 yards to Jalen Cropper and 13 yards to Ronnie Rivers in the second half.
Rivers had five catches for 91 yards, while Cropper had seven catches for 71 yards. Cropper also scored a touchdown on the ground.

In the Mountain West’s western division, Fresno State is still a half-game behind San Diego State.

San Jose State’s Matt Mercurio kicked field goals of 31, 26, and 36 yards in their last three games. Nick Starkel completed 19 of 42 passing for 260 yards and a touchdown.

This season, Haener has thrown for 3,810 yards and 32 touchdowns. Haener is the seventh Bulldog quarterback to throw for 3,000 yards in a season. Kevin Sweeney (1984), Trent Dilfer (1992, 1993), David Carr (2001), Paul Pinegar (2005), Derek Carr (2011, 2021, 2013), and Marcus McMaryion (2011, 2021, 2013) are among the players he joins (2018).
