FAA Investigates Drone Incident That Endangered Wildfire Response in Los Angeles

Payam Javan: A firefighting aircraft, known as a “Super Scooper,” was involved in a mid-air collision with a drone on Thursday while battling the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles. The plane, despite suffering damage to its wing, successfully made an emergency landing but has since been grounded for necessary repairs. The incident comes as firefighters continue their efforts to contain the ongoing wildfire, which has already caused significant destruction.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone confirmed the collision and highlighted the serious risks unauthorized drones pose to firefighting operations. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a reminder that interfering with emergency response activities is a federal crime, carrying penalties of up to one year in prison and fines as high as $75,000. An investigation into the incident is underway, with potential legal action being considered against the drone operator.
