Payam Javan: Two men are confirmed dead following a domestic-related shooting and subsequent eight-hour standoff at a residence in unincorporated Gilroy on Sunday afternoon, November 16.
Santa Clara County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a home on Sheldon Avenue just before 3:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. Witnesses on the scene informed deputies that a family member had shot a 68-year-old man and then barricaded himself inside the garage.
The incident triggered a large-scale response from the Sheriff’s Office, involving the deployment of specialized units including the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT), the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT), as well as an armored vehicle and drone technology. Nearby mobile homes and residences were safely evacuated as tactical teams worked to secure the area and negotiate a surrender.
Upon initial entry, deputies discovered the 68-year-old victim, who had been fatally shot and was pronounced dead at 4:17 p.m.
After several hours of attempted contact through announcements and phone calls, deputies used a drone to locate the suspect inside the garage. The suspect was found to have sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Investigative Services Division has taken charge of the crime scene. The investigation into the domestic incident is active and ongoing.
