Biden Opts to Complete Term After Abrupt Withdrawal from Re-Election Race

Payam Javan: President Joe Biden announced on July 21 that he is withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, opting to focus on completing his current term. The White House affirmed that Biden will continue his duties until January 2025, emphasizing his commitment to achieving significant results for the American people, including economic growth, job creation, and social security protection. White House spokesman Andrew Bates outlined the president’s agenda, which also includes defending freedoms and addressing radical abortion bans.

The announcement sparked calls from some Republicans for Biden to resign, questioning his ability to serve given his decision to withdraw from the re-election campaign. Rep. Mike Johnson argued that if Biden is unfit for re-election, he should also resign from the presidency. Additionally, Rep. Nancy Mace indicated plans to propose a resolution invoking the 25th Amendment, which allows the vice president and a majority of cabinet members to declare the president unfit for office.

In contrast, some lawmakers, including Sen. Joe Manchin, have urged Biden to remain in office to help unite the country and manage global peace efforts. The White House has not scheduled any public events for Biden between July 22 and July 28, though he is expected to continue receiving briefings.
