Biden Administration Pressured Facebook to Censor Content, Zuckerberg Reveals in New Letter

Payam Javan: In a recent revelation, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg admitted that the Biden-Harris administration exerted significant pressure on the platform to censor content, including the Hunter Biden laptop story from October 2020. In a letter to Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan, Zuckerberg clarified that, while Facebook’s mission is to support free speech and connect people, the platform yielded to governmental pressure, resulting in the suppression of various posts and stories.

Zuckerberg detailed in his letter that in 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration, including the White House, pushed Facebook’s teams to censor specific COVID-19 content, including satire and humor. He noted that this led to considerable frustration from the administration when Facebook did not fully comply with their demands. The acknowledgment marks a significant shift in Zuckerberg’s stance on the issue.

In response, the House Judiciary Committee highlighted three key admissions from Zuckerberg: that the Biden-Harris administration pressured Facebook, that Facebook complied by censoring content, and that it throttled the Hunter Biden laptop story. The committee lauded these admissions as a victory for free speech and a confirmation of their ongoing investigation into the administration’s alleged campaign to influence online platforms.

Zuckerberg also addressed the FBI’s role in the matter, revealing that the platform’s decision to censor the New York Post’s reporting on Hunter Biden’s laptop stemmed from FBI warnings about potential Russian disinformation. He conceded that the story was not, in fact, disinformation and expressed regret over the platform’s previous policy of demoting content while awaiting fact-checking. Zuckerberg further stated his commitment to avoiding partisan contributions in future election cycles, emphasizing a desire for neutrality.
