Social Security Benefits Projected to Increase by 3.6 Percent in 2027

Payam Javan: Federal officials announced on Wednesday that Social Security benefit payments are scheduled to increase by 3.6 percent in 2027. This inflation-related adjustment is expected to boost retirement payments for an estimated 72 million Americans beginning early that year.

The upcoming 2027 cost-of-living adjustment represents a 0.8 percentage point increase compared to the 2026 COLA, which was recorded at 2.8 percent. While the benefit spike for the vast majority of retirees will take effect in January 2027, increased payments for approximately 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income recipients will commence slightly earlier on December 31.

According to projections by the Senior Citizens League, the adjustment will raise the average monthly government benefit for retired workers from $2,087.52 to $2,162.67. This change translates to an average monthly increase of roughly $75.15 for beneficiaries nationwide.

Despite the impending increase, advocacy groups argue that the adjustment remains insufficient to meet the rising costs faced by older Americans. Critics note that the current COLA model consistently lags behind the actual expenses incurred by seniors, many of whom face broader financial pressures.

Data indicates that the average cost of living for a single senior citizen is estimated at approximately $2,700 per month, highlighting a significant gap between government benefits and day-to-day expenditures. Consequently, organizations like the Senior Citizens League continue to advocate for a comprehensive revision of how the adjustment is calculated.

The Social Security Administration currently determines the annual COLA using data from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers during the third quarter of the year. Recent tracking showed annual CPI-W changes of 3.4 percent in July, 3.5 percent in August, and 3.9 percent in September, which ultimately formed the basis for the 3.6 percent calculation.
