President Trump Reviews Allegations Against U.S. Ambassador to Greece

Payam Javan: President Donald Trump has confirmed that his administration is currently investigating allegations of improper conduct involving the U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle. The president addressed the issue during a press briefing, indicating that the White House is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the claims leveled against the diplomat. This official acknowledgment marks a significant development in the scrutiny of her tenure.

When questioned by reporters regarding the potential for her removal from the diplomatic post, President Trump expressed clear dissatisfaction with the situation. He stated that the administration is actively looking into the matter, though he stopped short of confirming any immediate personnel changes. The president’s comments underscore the seriousness with which the White House is treating these reports.

The allegations, which were initially reported by The Wall Street Journal, suggest that Guilfoyle solicited funds from a wealthy donor to settle a substantial personal debt. According to the report, the ambassador allegedly sent text messages requesting money to cover a $100,000 credit card bill prior to her confirmation hearing. It is claimed that she offered the donor access to influential circles within the Trump administration in exchange for the payment.

Furthermore, the reports allege that Guilfoyle boasted about receiving luxury travel and private jet services from executives associated with Aktor, a prominent Greek construction and energy firm. These claims are purportedly supported by audio recordings reviewed by journalists. Such allegations have raised questions regarding ethical standards and potential conflicts of interest inherent in her diplomatic role.

Legal representatives for the ambassador have vehemently denied any wrongdoing regarding these accusations. In a statement released earlier this month, attorneys David Schwartz and Jesse Binnall characterized the allegations as misleading and unfounded. They maintain that the ambassador has adhered to all ethical guidelines and that the reports misrepresent her professional activities.

The defense team provided a specific rebuttal regarding the financial dispute with donor Eric Deters. According to her lawyers, Deters, a former political candidate from Kentucky, owed Guilfoyle approximately $150,000 for past consulting and speaking engagements. They argued that her efforts to collect these funds were a legitimate attempt to settle outstanding debts before she assumed her government position.

In their statement, the attorneys asserted that requesting payment for completed professional services cannot be classified as corruption. They argued that the actions taken by the ambassador were standard business practices rather than an exchange for political influence. This defense forms the core of their strategy to refute the claims made in the media reports.

As the internal review by the White House continues, the future of the ambassador’s tenure remains uncertain. The administration is expected to weigh the evidence against the explanations provided by her legal counsel before making a final decision. For now, the diplomatic community awaits further updates as the investigation into these serious allegations proceeds under the president’s oversight.
