Payam Javan: Tom Cruise has officially announced his return as NASCAR driver Cole Trickle in an upcoming sequel to the 1990 sports drama “Days of Thunder.” Making the announcement at the Daytona International Speedway ahead of NASCAR’s regular-season finale, Cruise revealed that the film is slated for release by Paramount Pictures on June 2, 2028. Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway is set to co-star, portraying a team owner and engineer in the highly anticipated follow-up.

The project will see Cruise reunite with veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer, alongside Tommy Harper, to produce the film. Jonathan Levine has been tapped to direct the sequel, working from a screenplay penned by Will Staples. This announcement follows reports from late 2024 indicating that Cruise had been in active discussions with Paramount Pictures to revive the racing franchise.

The original “Days of Thunder” movie, released in 1990, initially faced critical skepticism and was criticized within the NASCAR industry for its exaggerated portrayal of stock-car racing. However, over the decades, the film has transitioned into a cult classic among motorsports enthusiasts. Gordon, currently serving as the vice chairman of Hendrick Motorsports, has previously advocated for a follow-up film.
