Payam Javan: Authorities in Los Angeles County have arrested an armed California man who was observed surveilling a golf course owned by Donald Trump in Rancho Palos Verdes. The suspect, identified as 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele, was spotted by plainclothes federal agents on Sunday taking photographs and videos of the coastal property, just days before the president was scheduled to arrive for a Republican National Committee event.
Upon detaining Taele, sheriff’s deputies discovered a loaded magazine in his possession and a loaded pistol inside his vehicle. Following the initial arrest, investigators obtained a search warrant for his residence in Downey, citing potential security implications. The subsequent search uncovered a cache of weapons, including a .45-caliber pistol, body armor, and an illegally modified AR-type pistol, alongside multiple notebooks containing unspecified concerning statements.
Taele has been booked on charges of carrying a concealed firearm and possession of prohibited ammunition, with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office currently reviewing the case to determine further charges. Despite the recovery of weapons and notebooks, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement on Tuesday clarifying that they have identified no active or credible threat to local communities.
The arrest occurred ahead of Trump’s scheduled arrival in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening. According to White House officials, the visit is intended to highlight the administration’s policy platform in contrast with the governance of California’s Democratic leadership, including Governor Gavin Newsom.
The incident adds to a series of high-profile security challenges involving Trump in recent months. In April, a California man named Cole Tomas Allen was arrested and charged with attempting to assassinate the president after breaching a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. Additionally, in July 2024, Trump survived an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania campaign rally when a gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire, grazing Trump’s ear and killing a rally attendee before being fatally shot by federal agents.
More recently, Ryan Routh was sentenced to life in prison following his conviction for attempting to assassinate Trump at a West Palm Beach golf course in September 2024. Prosecutors in that case demonstrated that Routh had spent weeks planning the attack before being discovered with a rifle near the property line while Trump was playing golf.
