Payam Javan: Actor George Clooney and his family have evacuated their estate in southern France, joining approximately 700 local residents forced to flee as a fast-moving wildfire threatened the region. The evacuation occurred as emergency crews worked to contain the blaze near the town of Brignoles, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of the area to seasonal wildfires.
Following the evacuation, Clooney sent a letter to Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond expressing his solidarity with the local community. In the message, the actor acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the safety of his family’s property but emphasized that he and his wife, Amal Clooney, remain deeply committed to aiding the village’s recovery efforts, regardless of the physical damage sustained.
The wildfire, which began on Wednesday afternoon, has burned roughly 250 acres of land. Although local authorities eventually lifted the evacuation orders and allowed residents to return to their homes, officials warned that firefighting conditions remain challenging. High temperatures and predicted strong winds continue to complicate containment efforts, keeping emergency services on alert.
The Clooneys purchased the Domaine du Canadel estate in 2021 for an estimated $10.3 million, utilizing the property as a private family retreat. The estate has since become their primary residence, and the couple, along with their nine-year-old twins, were granted French citizenship in December 2025, solidifying their ties to the local community.
While the fire near Brignoles remains relatively small, it coincides with a series of much larger and more destructive blazes across the country. In the Gironde region near Bordeaux, massive wildfires have scorched approximately 104,000 acres and forced the evacuation of more than 220,000 people, contributing to a nationwide total of 284,000 acres burned this season.
Environmental authorities indicate that the risk of wildfires throughout France remains high due to dry vegetation, elevated temperatures, and strong winds. Although some relief is anticipated as temperatures are projected to decrease slightly, officials caution that the threat of further outbreaks has not entirely subsided, requiring continued vigilance from residents and emergency responders.
