The South Carolina Republican, who served in Congress for nearly three decades, passed away on July 11 at the age of 71 due to a suspected aortic rupture. The funeral service followed a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, where Graham had laid in state, honored by colleagues from across the political spectrum for his extensive legislative career and military service.
President Donald Trump delivered a prominent eulogy at the service, describing Graham as a “true American original” and a “giant of the United States Senate.” Trump reflected on Graham’s enduring influence in Washington, noting his involvement in major legislative milestones, including tax cuts, military funding, and border security investments. The president also recalled Graham’s impassioned defense of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his 2018 confirmation hearings, calling it a historic moment in Senate history, while lightly reminiscing about their past rivalry during the 2016 Republican presidential primary.
The memorial attracted a diverse array of national and international figures, reflecting Graham’s significant footprint on global affairs. Among the attendees were Vice President JD Vance, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized Graham’s bipartisan appeal, noting that senators from both sides of the aisle counted him as a friend and praising his long-standing leadership on national security and defense.
Graham’s political career began with his election to the House of Representatives in 1994, followed by his transition to the Senate in 2003, where he eventually chaired the Judiciary and Budget Committees. Renowned as a foreign policy hawk, he consistently advocated for robust military action abroad, notably pushing for measures to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. To fill the vacancy left by his passing, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to serve out the remainder of his Senate term ending in January 2027. Nordone has announced her candidacy for a full six-year term in the upcoming election, securing an early endorsement from President Trump as she seeks to continue her brother’s legislative legacy.
