On June 14, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that a comprehensive peace agreement had been finalized between the United States and Iran. The deal, which includes the immediate removal of the U.S. naval blockade and the reopening of the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, represents a major diplomatic development following months of heightened tensions and military standoffs in the region. President Trump signaled that global maritime commerce could resume immediately, bringing an end to the blockade that had restricted commercial traffic.
The breakthrough was initially disclosed by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose government brokered the initial ceasefire on April 8. According to Sharif, the agreement mandates the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon. A formal signing ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 19 in Switzerland, with high-level international delegations, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance, expected to attend the event to finalize the terms.
The conflict and subsequent blockade had severely disrupted global energy markets, sending crude oil prices soaring from under $57 per barrel in December 2025 to over $114 per barrel in April 2026. Prior to the agreement, hundreds of commercial vessels remained idle in the Persian Gulf due to security concerns, including recent drone incidents in the waterway. President Trump stated that a key pillar of the peace deal is Iran’s commitment to permanently forgo the acquisition, development, or procurement of nuclear weapons.
Following the announcement, President Trump urged all regional actors to exercise restraint to safeguard the fragile agreement. He specifically criticized a recent Israeli military strike on Beirut, cautioning that escalating military actions could jeopardize the broader diplomatic efforts. Trump called for an end to hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, emphasizing the potential for a long-term peace in the Middle East if all parties adhere to the negotiated terms.
