Payam Javan: U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a Memorial Day address at Arlington National Cemetery, honoring both living and fallen American service members. Speaking at the historic Virginia cemetery, which serves as the final resting place for approximately 430,000 military personnel, the President emphasized national unity and drew historical parallels to the American Revolutionary War. He highlighted the sacrifices of early patriots at Lexington, Concord, and Bunker Hill, framing their actions as the foundational blood oath that birthed the nation ahead of its upcoming 250th anniversary.
The address took place against a backdrop of significant global developments in 2026, including ongoing tensions in the Middle East and Latin America. President Trump specifically paid tribute to 13 service members lost earlier in the year during Operation Epic Fury. Among those recognized was U.S. Air Force officer Ariana Savino, who died alongside five crew members in a refueling aircraft crash in western Iraq. The President stated that these service members sacrificed their lives to prevent nuclear proliferation by state sponsors of terrorism.
In addition to honoring recent casualties, the President recognized living military veterans from past conflicts, including 97-year-old World War II veteran Harry Miller, a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge. Trump praised the enduring legacy of the “greatest generation,” noting their service across multiple historic campaigns from World War II through the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine.
Concluding his address, the President delivered a message focused on national sovereignty, self-governance, and destiny. He asserted that the United States is currently performing stronger than ever before and reiterated a commitment to maintaining independence from foreign influence. The observance concluded with a traditional salute from military and administration leadership, reinforcing the administration’s stated focus on national defense and honoring military sacrifice.
