Santa Clara County Launches Probe into In-Custody Death at Elmwood

Payam Javan: A 19-year-old incarcerated man died early Sunday morning following a medical emergency at the Elmwood Correctional Complex men’s facility in Milpitas, California, authorities confirmed. The incident has prompted an official investigation in line with standard procedures for deaths occurring in custody.

According to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and on-site medical staff responded at approximately 11:35 p.m. Saturday, March 14, after the man was found unconscious. Although he initially had a pulse and was breathing, responders administered multiple doses of Narcan and began CPR, continuing life-saving efforts until emergency crews arrived.

Fire Department personnel and Emergency Medical Services took over shortly thereafter, but despite continued attempts to revive him, the man was pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m. Sunday. Officials stated that the individual had been in custody since November on multiple robbery-related charges connected to cases investigated by the San Jose Police Department. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that detectives, along with the District Attorney’s Office and the Medical Examiner-Coroner, are jointly investigating the incident. Authorities emphasized their commitment to safety and accountability within correctional facilities, noting that an internal review is also underway. Mental health and chaplain services have been made available to individuals housed in the affected unit as the investigation continues.
