Venezuela Frees Prominent Opposition Figures Amid Political Prisoner Releases

Several prominent Venezuelan opposition figures, including Juan Pablo Guanipa, Freddy Superlano, and lawyer Perkins Rocha, were released from prison on Sunday, according to their families and human rights groups. The move marks the latest in a series of high-profile prisoner releases by authorities in Caracas, amid growing international scrutiny and pressure.

Human rights organization Foro Penal reported that around 35 political prisoners were freed on Sunday alone and said it was verifying additional cases. The group has previously confirmed that a total of 383 political detainees have been released since the government announced a new release process on January 8, following years of criticism over the use of detentions to suppress dissent.

The released men are close allies of opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado. All had been detained on terrorism-related or political charges, which they and their supporters have consistently denied. Superlano, leader of the Voluntad Popular party, was arrested after the 2024 presidential elections and reportedly spent months in isolation, while Guanipa had been in hiding prior to his arrest last year.

The government continues to deny holding political prisoners, insisting detainees committed criminal offenses, while offering limited transparency on the scope and timing of releases. Meanwhile, interim President Delcy Rodriguez has proposed an amnesty law that would grant clemency to hundreds jailed for political activities, a measure that has passed an initial parliamentary vote and now awaits final approval.
