At Least Seven Killed as Iran’s Unrest Expands Beyond Tehran

Payam Javan: Protests driven by Iran’s worsening economic conditions spread on Thursday from major cities into rural provinces, leaving at least seven people dead, including demonstrators and members of the security forces, according to authorities and rights groups. The unrest, sparked by inflation and the sharp fall of the national currency, has slowed in Tehran but intensified in several regional cities, marking the most significant wave of protests since nationwide demonstrations in 2022.

The deadliest clashes were reported in multiple cities across western and central Iran, where videos circulating online showed gunfire, fires in the streets, and crowds confronting security forces. Semi-official media acknowledged fatalities in some areas, though state outlets provided limited coverage, reflecting continued pressure on journalists following arrests during previous protests. Human rights organizations said some of those killed were demonstrators, while officials blamed “rioters” for violence against security personnel.

Authorities indicated the unrest may trigger a tougher response, with arrests reported in several cities and security forces deployed to restore order. Officials stressed that the demonstrations stem from economic hardship, including soaring prices and currency instability, while warning against what they described as exploitation of public anger by political groups. State media also reported the arrest of individuals allegedly linked to opposition movements and the seizure of weapons.

The protests come as Iran grapples with deep economic strain, compounded by sanctions and regional tensions. President Masoud Pezeshkian has acknowledged limited options to address the crisis as the rial continues to weaken sharply against the dollar. While the government has signaled openness to dialogue and de-escalation, chants against the ruling system underscore broader political grievances alongside economic demands.
