Payam Javan: President Donald Trump criticized Democrats over the ongoing government shutdown, accusing them of endangering millions of Americans who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump said it remains legally uncertain whether his administration can redirect existing funds to cover SNAP benefits, given conflicting court rulings on the matter.
The current government shutdown, now extending beyond a month, has halted funding for multiple federal food assistance programs since November 1. As a result, approximately 42 million Americans face potential food insecurity. Trump and other Republicans have labeled the crisis the “Schumer shutdown,” blaming Democrats for insisting on what they call “reckless spending,” including proposals for healthcare coverage for undocumented immigrants.
In his statement, Trump stressed his intent to continue SNAP payments “if possible,” while awaiting judicial clarification. He emphasized that Americans should not “go hungry just because the Radical Democrats refuse to do the right thing and reopen the government.” Trump added that he has instructed government lawyers to seek immediate court guidance on how to legally distribute SNAP funds, warning that even with approval, states may face delays in issuing payments.
Trump concluded by urging Democrats to end the shutdown, stating it would be his “honor” to restore SNAP funding once legally permitted. Drawing parallels to his previous efforts to safeguard military and law enforcement pay, he accused Democrats of “hurting people for their own political reasons” and reiterated his call for an immediate reopening of the government.
