Senate Recess Begins Without Deal on Trump’s Nominees

Payam Javan: The Senate has adjourned for its month-long August recess, failing to reach a bipartisan agreement on the confirmation of dozens of President Donald Trump’s nominees. The stalemate followed days of contentious negotiations between Republican and Democratic leaders. Republicans, frustrated by the slow pace of confirmations, have warned they may change Senate rules in September to streamline the process. The failure to secure a deal came after Trump publicly attacked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on social media, accusing Democrats of “political extortion” and urging Republicans to leave Washington.

The current gridlock is the latest escalation in a long-running partisan battle over executive and judicial appointments. In recent years, both parties have incrementally changed Senate rules to overcome obstruction. Democrats changed the rules in 2013 to eliminate the 60-vote threshold for lower court judicial nominees, and Republicans did the same for Supreme Court nominees in 2017. With this latest standoff, Democrats have defended their tactics, with Schumer stating that they have “never seen nominees as flawed, as compromised, as unqualified” as those put forward by the current administration. The outcome leaves the future of many key positions uncertain as the Senate prepares for a potential showdown over its rules upon its return.
