Kamala Harris Officially Nominated for President by Democratic Party

Payam Javan: Vice President Kamala Harris has been officially nominated for president by the Democratic Party, following virtual voting completed late on August 5. Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Jaime Harrison announced that 99 percent of delegates had cast their votes in favor of Harris. The DNC plans to formally certify the results and celebrate Harris’s nomination at its convention in Chicago later this month.

Harris surpassed the necessary delegate threshold on August 2, having secured over 3,923 signatures. According to DNC rules established in July, a candidate needs the support of at least 1,975 pledged delegates on the first ballot to secure the presidential nomination. The virtual roll call began on August 1, ahead of the national convention set for August 19–22, to meet ballot certification deadlines across multiple states.

With no other candidate meeting the 300-delegate threshold to challenge Harris, the DNC advanced the nomination process to preempt potential legal issues related to ballot certification deadlines. Harris is expected to announce her running mate shortly before a campaign event in Philadelphia on August 6. The DNC convention will officially present Harris and her running mate, with President Joe Biden scheduled to deliver a primetime speech on the convention’s opening night.
